About the artist, Purnell Pettyjohn:
Purnell Hearn Pettyjohn is a native of Martinsville, Virginia and has lived in Lynchburg, Virginia since 1972. In 1991, she discovered the mysterious and unpredictable properties of watercolor by taking a local class. After nineteen years of study with various local and nationally known instructors, she began sharing the knowledge she gained with instruction and exploration. She presently teaches adult watercolor classes to beginner, intermediate and advanced students, in her studio, Art on 12th, which is located over the Art Box in downtown, Lynchburg.
Watercolors and oils are Purnell’s favorite mediums. Her paintings are bright depictions of daily observations, emphasizing the play of light, shadow and color. She likes to stretch the realm of color in some of her paintings to hopefully excite and surprise the viewer. She is not partial to any particular subject matter. She enjoys landscapes, still life, room interiors, animal, people and house portraits.
Purnell has shown her work at the Academy of Fine Arts, the Lynchburg Art Club, the Lodge of the Fisherman, Silver Thistle, Pheasants Eye, Magnolia Foods, Meriwether’s Market, Community First Bank and the Lynchburg Art Club Festival in Lynchburg. She has also had solo shows at the Lynchburg Art Club, the Lynchburg Academy of Fine Arts and the Piedmont Arts Association in Martinsville, Virginia. Presently, Purnell’s paintings can be seen at Riverview’s Co-Op Gallery and in her downtown and home studios.
Purnell is a signature member of the Virginia Watercolor Society. Her paintings have been accepted in several juried area art shows, the tri State Watercolor Society, the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, the Baltimore Watercolor Society, the Virginia Watercolor Society, the West Virginia Watercolor Society, the Central Virginia Watercolor Guild, the National Watercolor Society and the American Watercolor Society. Throughout the years, her paintings have received various awards.
