About LHS – The Lynchburg Humane Society is a 501c3 private non-profit organization caring for stray, lost, and homeless pets. We are the largest No Kill Humane Society in the state of Virginia and believe that no healthy or treatable pet should be euthanized. We operate the public shelters and adoption centers for the City of Lynchburg and the county of Appomattox with a combined annual intake of more than 5,000 pets. The LHS spay/neuter clinic is located in Evington, VA and performs more than 6,500 surgeries annually.

Position Overview – The Executive Director serves as a compassionate leader and liaison between the Board of Directors, the community, municipalities, and shelter staff. Required skills of the Executive Director include strong interpersonal, motivational and leadership skills with the staff and public, strength in public speaking, demonstrated ability to develop and manage an annual operating expense budget of $2.5M and lead a staff of 50 full and part-time employees; demonstrated knowledge and experience in fund-raising and development, and a passion for pets. The Executive Director is responsible for all aspects of running the two shelters and spay/neuter clinic, public and donor relations, and is the “face” of the Lynchburg Humane Society.
- Organizational leadership
- Financial acumen, including developing and managing a $2.5M annual operating expense budget
- Fund raising and development – building on our successful $1.5M annual fund-raising program
- Participatory leadership of the executive team, to include the Associate Director, the Director of Development, and the Director of Finance and Administration
- Community and donor relations
- Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Minimum of 3 years significant management experience
- Non-profit leadership experience preferred

Behavior and Training Volunteer – Have a knack for training? Want to help pets who are scared come out of their shell? Love watching dogs play and would love even more to see our dogs getting play time? This is a specialized volunteer position that works with dogs and cats on various training and enrichment tasks. One large component will be assisting in running dog play groups. Other tasks include following behavior plans with pets, socializing with pets, walking dogs who need extra tools, implementing enrichment plans for dogs and cats, and learning how to train basic behaviors in pets. Weekend Receptionist Volunteer – This is a unique volunteer position where you would be able to work closely with the organization and get to know the ins and outs of our operation. We are looking for someone to run our front desk Sat-Sun from 10am-5pm. You would be greeting the public, managing emails, voicemails, and scheduling appointments. You will get to work will all departments and get to be apart of finding happiness for the pets at our center.
