The Lynchburg Humane Society is a nationally recognized lifesaving shelter with an annual intake of about 3,500 pets.  We firmly believe that no healthy or treatable pet should be euthanized. By operating the public shelter for the City of Lynchburg, we accept those that are easily adoptable as pets, as well as those that need special nurturing from abusive or neglectful experiences. Along with our Center for Pets, we also have a regional spay and neuter/wellness clinic which performs over 6,000 spay/neuter surgeries annually.  The Lynchburg Humane Society not only saves pets from the City of Lynchburg, we also save hundreds pets each year who are at risk of euthanasia from other shelters.  The Lynchburg Humane Society participates in mentoring and training other organizations in life-saving programs in Virginia and across the country.


Medical Associate – full and part time positions

The Medical Assistant works closely with Veterinarians and Medical Team Manager ensuring the health of all shelter animals. Performing physical examinations, dispensing medications, providing care and treatment for sick shelter animals, maintaining records, communicating with staff, volunteers, and the public regarding treatment plans. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays. Pet Help Associatefull time and part time positions 

Do you want to help pets and their owners?  Our Pet Help team is responsible for helping owners who need to rehome their pets, assisting with lost pets, answering phone calls, assisting in transferring pets to our facility from other organizations.  This is a fast paced position that requires compassion, multitasking and time management and excellent customer service skills.  Must be willing to work weekends and holidays. We are seeking hardworking pet lovers to help care for the pets.  Candidate must be able to multitask and have great time management skills. Must be able to work with dogs and cats. Must be able to stand and move around for long periods of time, bend, and lift large bags of dog food. The Lynchburg Humane Society located in beautiful and diverse Central Virginia provides public quality/high volume spay/neuter, wellness services, and medical services to help pets stay in their existing homes.  We also care for over 3,500 pets each year in our Center for Pets in which we provide medical services for to prepare pets for adoption.   We are looking for veterinarians to join our team to expand our services to help more pets. This is an exciting time and opportunity for a veterinarian to come onboard with our nationally recognized team.  You will have the distinction of being part of the industry leading Lynchburg Humane Society and will have the opportunity to be a part of designing and implementation of  a brand new medical facility that moves Lynchburg forward in shelter medicine, spay neuter and community engagement.

You would join a team of an experienced veterinary team comprised of 3 veterinarians, and an experienced medical team.

  • This position will work 1-5 days per week performing high quality spay/neuter surgeries and wellness and dental and/or shelter medicine. 
  • You will be trained and supported by our experienced, award winning team 
  • You must have a willingness to do what it takes to fulfill our mission of leading the way in providing a compassionate, safe community for animals and people through progressive life-saving programs, services, resources, and education..
  • You will be an integral part to our vision of helping to create a community where all lives are valued and respected.  
  • You must be able to operate within our core values.
  • Must have an active license to practice veterinary medicine in Virginia or ability to obtain a Virginia license.
  • Ability to perform on average, 35 spay/neuter surgeries per day.  (If that is not a present skill, must have the ability and drive to work toward and succeed in that goal).
  • Ability to obtain a DEA license. 
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced, team-oriented environment.

LVT or student enrolled in LVT school, Full Time and Part Time positions

Lynchburg Humane Society’s Spay/Neuter clinic is seeking a licensed vet tech. Our clinic serves 7 counties surrounding the Greater Lynchburg City area, accepting between 125-300 patients a week.  Our distinguished, award winning 2 doctor led staff thrives in a fast paced environment that is dedicated to quality animal care for both shelter and owned animals. This is a team oriented environment where a positive attitude, flexible thinking and competent animal handling skills are a must. Our core values focus on a staff that is able to have fun while accomplishing goals in an effective, highly functioning clinic environment.

Duties involved, but are not limited to, surgical assisting, vaccination and medication of surgical patients, patient check-in, drug log maintenance, staff training and vaccine clinic appointments. We are willing to train the right candidate. Students must have passed their Pharmacology course to be considered.  Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, sit and crouch for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs and be comfortable restraining and interacting with animals.
