Puppy Services

Puppy Social – As much fun as the dog park can be, having an indoor, supervised environment to provide positive play opportunities for your puppy with other puppies can be much more comfortable for you and your puppy. Proper early socialization will help your puppy confidently adjust to a wide variety of environments and experiences. If your dog is between 8 weeks and 6 months old, has at least their first round of vaccines, and you’re looking for a great way to tire them out after work or socialize them to other dogs and people, then attend our Puppy Social on Tuesday nights from 5-5:45 pm. Each session is $5 and requires a new sign up. Come as many weeks as you would like!

Puppy Kindergarten – Our puppy class is geared toward youngsters from 8 weeks to 6 months old. Together you’ll practice puppy manners (sit, lie down, pay attention, come when called), learn and share puppy parenting tips (resolve house-training, play-biting, jumping, chewing, and barking), and enjoy positive exposure to other puppies, people, and new experiences. Our training classes are taught by a team of expert positive reinforcement trainers, so all puppies love attending Kindergarten! We meet weekly on Tuesday nights from 6-7, so come to as many or as few classes as you want, and pick what you want to learn each week. Each session is $25 and requires a new sign up.

Adult Dog Classes

Taught by LHS Training and Behavior Manager, Kayleigh Raposa.

Our full training courses are 6-week packages that include one hour-long class per week. Our basic obedience class, Homeroom Hotshots and our Canine Good Citizen class are structured so you can start any week and attend the next 6 consecutive classes.  The enrollment fee for any of the classes is $150 for 6 weeks, and there is a discount for dogs adopted from the Lynchburg Humane Society, Appomattox Pet Center, Pittsylvania Pet Center, or Friends of Campbell County Animal Shelter. If you have any questions about enrollment or need to know what class would be best for your pet, please kayleigh@lynchburghumane.org to be put on the email list.

*****Blackout Dates: There are some weeks that we cannot host classes due to events or staffing. Classes will resume where they left off the following week.

Homeroom Hotshots – Need your dog to learn how to sit, down, go to a mat, or stay? What about some basic manners like not jumping to greet others, coming when called, or walking nicely on leash? Then Homeroom Hotshots is for you! This class is for adult dogs (5+ months) and their owners who would like to work on basic obedience behaviors in a group setting. We will be using positive enforcement training methods to teach new behaviors, regain focus in the face of distraction, and help the dogs find a new excitement for learning. By the end of your 6 weeks, you will know how to train new behaviors and solve problems that you and your dog face in the real world.

Sign up options:

  • Thursday nights from 5:30-6:30pm
  • Saturday mornings from 10-11am

CGC Prep School – The Canine Good Citizen certification program through American Kennel Club has been a gold standard of good dog manners in public for years. In this class, we will go through the behaviors you and your dog need to know to get this certification and teach general good habits for a variety of public situations. The ideal team for this course is a dog with some basic obedience experience (sit, down, attention, etc.) and a handler with some positive reinforcement training experience.  This certification is a first step towards any therapy dog work and provides a great foundation for any dog and owner who will be out and about in the public.

Sign up options:

  • Thursday evenings from 4-5pm
  • Saturday mornings from 11:30am-12:30pm

Recess Rockstars – You and your canine friend can learn what it takes to have a dog who is reliable in the face of distraction. During this class, we will do many exercises and games that will help your dog with recall, obedience, and focus regardless of distractions and other pets. By increasing the level of distraction systematically we can work through any problem behaviors that come up during distracting times. If you have an adult dog (6+ months) who has gone through some obedience training, but could use some more practice with on and off switches for behaviors and increasing attention span while decreasing reactivity, come to Recess Rockstars! This course meets once a week for 6 weeks.

Join this class to learn how to teach your pup some fun things like spin, back up, targets, jumping and more! Tricks like these build the teamwork between you and your dog, increase your dog’s confidence, expand your knowledge about training via shaping, and they are definitely crowd pleasers at a party. This course meets once a week for 6 weeks.
