After surviving being hit by a car, sweet momma Rosie has finally found a home!

Over 3 months ago, Rosie made her journey from the Campbell County shelter to the Lynchburg Humane Society after she was found with multiple severe injuries. She was believed to have been hit by a car. With a broken leg, and a gaping wound on her backside, Rosie was in pain, and in desperate need of medical attention. Rosie was also very pregnant. We were unsure if any of her puppies would make it after what she had been through, and sadly, most of them did not. With the extent of her injuries and some difficulties after birth, 4 puppies were stillborn, and two more passed within a few days after birth. There was one surviving puppy, Sir Oolong.
Rosie spent the last several months in an amazing foster home where she was given the most quality care to ensure her recovery, and the survival of her one puppy. Not only did her puppy survive but they both became so strong and healthy during their time in foster. Last moth Sir Oolong was big enough to graduate from foster and found his home just hours after returning to the Center. Rosie had to wait a little longer, but the wait was worth it.

This weekend a sweet family came in hoping to foster Rosie with the intentions of adopting. It only took a day for them to know she was the one. Thank you so much to everyone who adopted from us this week and thank you to Rosie’s new family for giving her a loving home. We also want to shout out our sponsors Jeff & Cary Sims, Realtors for supporting us and making these adoptions possible.

53 pets found happiness this week after a successful Back to School special!!

If you saw our post earlier this week for newbie Garlic, you’ll know we really wanted to find her a home.

An affectionate tortoiseshell girl, Garlic, is a little chubby. Garlic was actually adopted from us in 2017 and has spent the last 9 years in a home. She was transferred back to us last week after her owners could no longer care for her. We aren’t sure what brought her back to us, but her spirits were high and she wasn’t letting this separation get her down. Getting back out of the shelter and into a home for some good exercise was all she needed now to loose a little weight!

Thankfully someone heard our plea and fell in love with her photos. They came in just in time for our $50 Back to School adoption special. They met her and knew she was the one. It was love at first site and they took her home.

We can’t thank her new owners enough for taking her home and our partners at Bank of the James for sponsoring this months adoptions.

We ended Clear the Shelters month on a bang with 52 adoptions this week!!

One adoption we are so excited to share, is Coca Cola’s!! Coca Cola came to us in February earlier this year after he was transferred from another facility. Before that he was a lost cat and in such close quarters with so many new people he was scared. It was a while before he came around but with some treats and a slow hand he eventually started opening up. He loves playing on and in his cardboard box, playing with toys, and even getting his cheeks rubbed!! We were so proud to see his progress and knew that he’d open up even more in a home.

This weekend during the final week of Clear the Shelters, someone came in and fell in love with Coca Cola!! We are so excited to see where life takes these two and hope that Coca Cola opens up that much more in his new amazing home. Thank you for rescuing Coca Cola, and thank you Bank of the James for being this month’s sponsors.

Don’t let fears of illness keep you from adopting the pet of your dreams.

We are so proud to share that long stay Nala, finally found a home after waiting for approximately 2 years!! Nala was a 7 year old, beautiful, gentle girl. When she first came to us, she was actually at another facility, she desperately needed a dental, and she had FIV. This, combined with the stress of moving around, she was shy and didn’t get much adoption interest. It took us a while to figure out her dental issues, but eventually we were able to remove the affected teeth, which happened to be all of them! Slowly, she started to feel better and look better. But, she still had FIV. And as the years went by and she became more brave and even affectionate, she still had FIV, and our customer’s fears kept them from taking that step with her. She was lucky to spend time in a foster home, but had to eventually come back to the Center.

When adopters hear feline immunodeficiency virus, it is understandable if their first reflex is fear. FIV makes it harder for cats to fight off illness it does NOT create sickness. This just means they need a little extra help if/when they ever do get sick. If the cat is given quality care and lives in a clean indoor environment with regular vaccines, they will live a long and fulfilling life. FIV is also not easily passed from one cat to another. It can only be spread through deep bite wounds, and it is not contagious to people or other species. So cats like Nala, who have a positive history with other cats, would not be at risk of spreading! For years, people didn’t think they could adopt Nala, for the fear that they could not handle the combination of her FIV and her susceptibility to stomatitis flare-ups.

Until one day, a sweet customer looking to adopt a cat, came through our doors. Her heart ached for Nala. Not only did she refuse let her FIV keep her from adopting, but she embraced it, knowing it was something that could be managed. Thank you so so much to Nala’s new mom for adopting, it means so much to us, and we know it means the world for Nala!!

Our sponsors at Bank of the James also deserve a shoutout for being this month’s sponsors!

Our sweet boy Duncan went home!!

This weekend was our first fee-waived cat special of the year, and it was more successful that we could have hoped for!! Not only did 43 pets get adopted in three days, but Duncan, our sweet long stay senior finally found a home!!

If you’ve never seen his story, Duncan is a sweet senior with some tummy issues. He is approximately 12 years old and has been with us for far too long. When he was first surrendered to us his owner could no longer care for him. Since then, he’s come such a long way and has had multiple wonderful fosters who have given him safe haven as we looked for the best way to manage his tummy problem. But he’s never had adoption interest. He’s always been a favorite among our staff so this weekend when a family came in to meet him our hearts exploded into pieces!!

We know he’s meowing at his new people when they come home as we speak, and making all sorts of biscuits!!

Every adoption is a second chance, and this week was full of them. We want to keep the momentum going!! This week we will be holding TWO adoption specials. One for cats and kittens, fees are waived today 8/5 and tomorrow 8/6, and one for dogs, stay tuned for more details.

Thank you so much to everyone who adopted this weekend, and thank you Bank of the James for being this month’s sponsor!
