Did you know? The responsible, but tough decisions of a ”no-kill”/lifesaving shelter.

Back in January, I wrote a blog about what it means to be a no-kill shelter.  That blog was an overview about the meaning of no-kill, and how it doesn’t mean that we are able to save every pet that comes to us.  While I wish we could save everyone, it’s not feasible, realistic, or responsible. But…let’s dig into that a little more.

We save a lot of lives here. We give it our all to try to save all of the pets that come to us in need.   While it is sad and difficult to make the decision to euthanize a pet when it is terminally sick or severely injured, it is, of course, the right thing to do. We never want a pet to suffer.

But when it comes to pets (usually these are dogs) that have behavior issues and could be a risk to the community – that’s when things get real tough.  They aren’t physically sick and they aren’t suffering from injuries…but they are not safe to be adopted, so what do we do?

We work hard – that’s what we do! We give the pet everything we can to try to make them adoptable, we look for rescues, we evaluate their behavior, we contact veterinary behaviorists, we talk with professional trainers, but sometimes none of that works and a very tough decision has to be made.  When that happens, we know we have done everything we can to save that pet, and that euthanasia may be the only safe decision.  Even though we are able to save many pets that have some behavior issues, the truth is that we are not a behavior rehabilitation facility, and so we must do what is right not only for the pet, but also for the safety of the community.  These are the decisions that are often the toughest for our staff and volunteers because these are usually pets that have been with us the longest since we take the time to do everything we can, and in that time our staff becomes very close with these pets. So when a tough decision has to be made, it can be devastating.

Because of our community, we have an amazing shelter but it is no place for a pet to stay long term.  Some pets can handle this stressful environment, and others can’t.  And if a pet is not ready for adoption or has special needs that make them harder to adopt, their stay here can be life threatening.  We do everything possible to make them comfortable during their stay, but inevitably some pets start to mentally decline. Their quality of life begins to deteriorate and if we can’t get them out of the shelter, we must make the decision to euthanize – because again, we never want a pet to suffer.

We are fortunate that with the thousands of pets we save, the ones that are too sick, too injured, or too unsafe for the community only make up about 7% of the pets we see each year.

Our hope is that in the future, humanity will be kinder to pets and fewer will come into shelters and when they do come into the shelters, more will be able to be saved.  But for now, we know we are doing everything possible for our community and the pets. Thank you to our staff, our volunteers, our fosters, and our community for helping us continue to save every pet we can.

Sweet Sadie ad 41 other pets found happiness this week!

Sadie came into our care back in 2022. Since then, our team has learned that she is nothing but a big ol’ goofball who wants nothing but your love and attention. When she wasn’t trying to snuggle up to you could find her snuggled up with her favorite stuffie.

On Friday of last week, she found her match! An adopter came in looking for a companion that was sweet and loves cuddles and well, long story short she found Sadie. We are so happy for them and this new journey they are on together.

We want to say thank you to Fran Briley for sponsoring Sadie’s adoption fee, and to everyone who adopted this past week giving so many pets new loving homes. Thank you also to Terry Subaru for being this month’s sponsor and for hosting #SubaruLovesPets event.

Double trouble Uno and Patches found happiness together, as well as 102 other pets were adopted this week!

Meet Uno and Patches, the most iconic duo here at LHS!

Uno and Patches came in together and have been inseparable ever since. We could always find them cuddled up together whenever we passed by, and always had to snag a picture or two of them. Though it doesn’t always happen, the staff had their fingers crossed that they would end up getting adopted together.

A couple came in on Tuesday of last week and wanted two cats who would get along in their home (What are the chances?!). One of our staff members mentioned Uno and Patches to them, telling them about their story. The couple decided to meet them and sure enough it was a match! Uno and Patches got to stay together!

We are so happy for Uno and Patches and their new family! Thank you to everyone who came in and adopted this past week giving so many deserving pets new homes. Thank you also to Terry Subaru for being this month’s sponsor and for hosting #SubaruLovesPets event.

Sweet potato Tater found happiness along with 94 other pets!

Tater had a family coming in to visit and spend time with him these past few weeks to get to know him and they officially made the decision to adopt Thursday!

Some of you may know, but Tater only had a few friends he would let pet him in the shelter. He struggled to make connections in the shelter environment and was only getting worse the longer he went without a home. He desperately wanted to make friends, but he slowly started closing himself off.

When his new family finally took him home, Tater was confused at first. The TV startled him, he didn’t know where to sleep or use the bathroom, and he was unsure whether he should get comfortable or not. But after a few days, with the love and patience of his new family, he finally realized he wasn’t going back to the shelter. He quickly discovered his favorite place to rest was on the couch, and in their laps.

Tater is a great example of just how much a home can make a difference in a dog’s personality. Tater desperately loves attention but he was so overwhelmed by the uncertainty in his life that he couldn’t allow himself to go there. Now that he’s in a home he’s an entirely different dog!

His new family, our staff, and Tater of course, worked so hard to make this happen. We couldn’t be more proud of Tater as well as grateful to everyone involved in this match. Tater’s adoption fee was even sponsored by a Good Samaritan making things easier for his new owners to spoil him.

Thank you so much for welcoming Tater into your home, thank you to everyone who adopted giving so many pets new homes, and thank you to Terry Subaru for being this month’s sponsor and for hosting #SubaruLovesPets event.

Goose and 68 other pets found happiness this week!

Meet sweet Goose! This handsome man was brought into our care because if medical concerns with his bladder. With the help of AECC and Peaksview Animal Hospital, we got Goose healthy again and changed up his diet to help with future urinary care.

While being in our care we discovered that he is such a gentleman of a cat. Loves cuddles, pets, and all the attention. We aren’t surprised his new family snatched him up so quickly!
