Our First Petco Kitten Special of the Year!

Like every year around this time, when kitten season begins to pick up, we partner with Petco to bring you discounted kitten adoptions!! Last Friday, we brought 10 kittens to Petco for a quick adoption event, and all but one found homes! Sootsprite, a panluke survivor, didn’t find a home on the day, but after sharing his story on social media a day later, someone fell in love and took him home too!

Did you know this month was Mental Health Awareness Month?

Throughout the month of May, we’ve partnered with Horizon Behavioral Health for Mental Health Awareness Month to bring you informational material and highlight the benefits that pets have on our mental health! This initiative is important to us because at the Lynchburg Humane Society, we believe that helping pets and helping people go hand-in-hand.

Throughout the month of May, Horizon Behavioral Health has made periodic visits to The Center for Pets to speak with the community, provide resources, and encourage adoption. To round out the month, we organized an “Adopt Wellness” initiative to lower adoption fees and encourage an adoption movement. Because our dog population is tilting high and our cat adoption numbers have been steady, we decided to lower dog adoption fees last weekend. 6 dogs found homes thanks to the “Wag more, Worry Less” adoption special, including Nico who we rescued from Danville below!!

Thank you Horizon Behavioral Health for helping Nico find his dream home, with the best new dad! It is always a good day when our costomers find happiness like this!

The first kittens of the season have been adopted!

This week, our first big litter of kittens rescued from the streets graduated from foster care, strong and healthy. In our city, and cities across the nation, there is a huge homeless cat population problem. Hundreds of cats and kittens suffer every year in the summer months. Spaying and neutering your pets, keeping up with their vaccines, and participating in TNR are the answers to this problem. But while this problem persists, the kittens who are sick, or injured, or left without moms come to LHS. We take on the role of caregiver until they are healthy enough, strong enough, and old enough to safely be adopted into their new homes.

We appreciate our amazing fosters who help us with the process so much, and we are just as grateful to our adopters who are ready at the wings to give loving new homes to these guys once they are ready.

First weekend of Empty the Shelters has ended with 61 adoptions!

After one weekend we are already celebrating so many wonderful adoptions! As many of you know, this week has been a difficult one for our team. The highlight through all of it, and the reason for why we do what we do, is that we continue to see more pets find loving homes. Even after a heartbreaking loss, our hearts remain full and beyond grateful for the community that continues to show up for us and our pets. We couldn’t do this amazing work without you, and we’d like to thank all of the adopters, as well as the BISSELL Pet Foundation for making these adoptions possible.

BIG MAMA IS HOME!!

You may remember Zena when she was in our care in 2023 with her 7 full grown puppies. While they were slowly adopted Zena waited and waited until she had been with us for 2 years. When she was finally adopted last summer we were ecstatic. Unfortunately it was only a year later that she was returned again. Having spent almost half her life in a shelter now, did not want her to spend any more unnecessary time in the shelter. We marketed her HARD making tiktok videos, posting on our stories and resharing old photos. And thankfully, it worked!

Two weeks ago a family came in after seeing her online. They spent a few days coming back for meet and greets to make sure she was the sweet and perfect dog they were looking for, and she was! Thank you so much to these adopters, and thank you to Terry Subaru our sponsors this month!
