Orange Pop is outta here!!

Last week, we shared that our long time stay of 8 months, Orange Pop, had not been feeling like himself. Orange Pop is 8 years old, and toothless, and being in the shelter was starting to take its toll. Usually sweet and affectionate, the longer Orange Pop spent in the shelter, the more restless he became, and it was breaking our hearts. We made some changes to his environment, hoping it would help his mood, and made him a “pet of the month,” waiving his adoption fee, hoping it would bring some adoption attention!

We were so happy when both worked! Orange Pop started feeling like himself again after moving to a lower traffic room, inviting pets from everyone, and when we shared this with our followers someone immediately took interest.

A few days later, Orange Pop went home with her! We’ve already gotten an update on the new happy family pair:

“After getting home with Orange Pop I got him situated in his own space and sat with him quietly for quite a while. He eventually came around meowing for pets and hasn’t stopped being a love bug since! He has some new toys and furniture on the way and seems to be adjusting very well. He loves to flop against me and roll over for pets and it melts my heart! He’s very very loved and I’m super happy to have had the opportunity to adopt him.”

After our black cat post 4 of our black cats found homes!!

Mama Roxie, Eclipse, Mambo, and Solstice all went home this week just a few days after being shared on social media. With the kittens numbers low our cat population is low. And if you came by our Center and noticed an unusually high number of black cats in our care, it is not because there are more than usual; there are just fewer of the other cats filling in the gaps!

Black is the MOST common coat color in cats. They are not bad luck, and we feel lucky to have a community we believe does not buy into that stereotype. Some of our nicest cats have been black. Some of the cats with the goofiest personalities have been black. And some of our shy cats are currently black.

When we shared these facts on social media our community responded!! Mama Roxie, a slightly shy girl in our Living Room was adopted the very next day. Then two days later, a sweet woman has seen that we had working cats looking for homes, but also wanted to adopt a black cat as a companion! So she left with two black cats! Mambo the working cat, and 1 year old Solstice who is besties with Mambo!

And it happened again!! Riley and Maggie both got their second chance at Happiness!

There were lots of great adoptions this week, but two stand out above the rest! Recently, our long stays Riley and Maggie were both returned to our care after outside forces forced their adopters to give them up.

Maggie is young and we weren’t worried about finding her another home, but were heartbroken nonetheless that she was back in the shelter. On the other hand, Riley is 8years old. He should be spending his days peacefully in a home, napping surrounded by pillows, yet he’s found himself in the shelter yet again.

Shortly after Riley’s return, we pushed hard to find him a foster home. We were lucky enough that someone stepped forward during the winter storm to take him home! What was initially supposed to be a few days away from the shelter during the storm quickly and unsurprisingly turned into “I think I’ll keep him until he finds his forever home…” She didn’t know it then, but she would become his forever family just a few short weeks later.

When Maggie was returned, she also found a foster home quickly! Then, a few short weeks later, a family asked to meet her. Her foster, who lived quite a ways away, made the trip back to Lynchburg just for her to meet her potential new family. And it was a match!! They spent 20 minutes learning about Maggie from her foster and getting to know her difficult past. They felt for Maggie’s past, but more than anything they liked her for her!

Athena found Happiness!

Please wish Athena a happy adoption day! This precious girl came to us a few weeks ago looking for a fresh start. She was severely underweight, but with the help of our amazing medical team, she was able to put on weight. The whole time, Athena remained remarkably resilient! She stayed happy, confident, and gave love to everyone she met, which is why it wasn’t hard at all for her to find a lovely home. She was placed on hold by a sweet man looking for a big cuddly friend, and he patiently waited until she was strong enough before bringing her home!

14 Long Stay Dogs Found Love this Weekend!

Out of our 30 longest stay dogs included in our iconic long stay “Love at Last” special, 14 found their new families on the 14th!! If you’ve been keeping up with our socials, you’ll know each year we waive the adoption fees of our 25 longest stay dogs (plus a few extra) to help them find homes. In total, 14 dogs were adopted: Angus (our longest stay in house resident), Macaroni, Zoe, Ares, Chelsea, Maroon, Pinkie Pie, Sadie, Stella, Stormy, Tydus, and Mama Memphis, Oogie Boogie, and Pumpkin Roll were adopted by their foster families! We are so happy for every one of these new pairings and the beginning of their new journeys.
