Weather won’t keep our pets from finding homes, 23 to be exact!
The week of the storm we were either closed or had adjusted hours every day to keep our staff and customers safe from the severe weather. On the days we were open we still had adoptions! And let’s not forget that 20 of our pets found foster during the storm many of which are still in foster today.
Thank you so much to our adopters and thank you Petco Love for supporting us through the end of January! Our hours have resumed as usual; Open from 12pm to 7pm on weekdays and 11am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. If there is any more inclement weather, check our Facebook page and socials for updated hours.
Rain, shine, or ice storm our supporters always come through!
With the scary weather forecast earlier this week and the anticipation of storm “Fern” hitting VA hard, we whipped together a last-minute adoption special, called the “Snow Storm Fern Special”. We pushed hard for our pets to find homes and foster homes for the weekend, so that the few staff staying the night to care for our pets would have less to worry about keeping warm. We had so many happy adoptions like sweet old man Ferdinand, long stay cat Piglet, and even more successful foster placements for the weekend!
Thank you so so much to everyone who adopted or took home a foster pet, and thank you Petco Love for being this month’s sponsor and providing us with so much support!
67 adoptions this week and these kids are sticking together!!
A few weeks ago, “siblings” or long-time housemates (so basically siblings) Maggie Mae and Quinten came to LHS after their owner passed away. After going through such a difficult event of losing their owner and coming to the shelter, losing each other would be too much to ask of them after their 4+ years together. Small dogs tend to find homes more quickly compared to larger dogs, so while finding two dogs a home would be a little more challenging and take more time we knew we could do it for their sake!
Only one week later, much sooner than we would have ever expected, someone came in to adopt them.
Thank you so much to these adopters for giving these two dogs a second chance at happiness, and thank you to our sponsors at Petco Love for showing your support this month!
Queen Julien is officially the newest member of her foster family!!
If you remember Queen Julien, she was found with her legs dragging behind her in July of last year. She had no control over most of her lower body and was also incontinent. Despite her partial paralysis, Queen Julien’s spirits were high when she arrived on our doorstep. We sent her to foster to see if her condition was permanent or just the result of a temporary injury. Luckily, she was given a chance with the best person for the job. After fostering and then adopting another kitten with a leg deformity not 6 months earlier Chandler, a staff member, knew she had the practice and patience to give Queen Julien a good home while we learned more about her. After months in foster, multiple rounds of acupuncture treatment, and physical therapy, it became clear her disability would be permanent.
After so many months in foster, learning her needs and loving her so much already, Chandler decided Queen Julien, now Juniper Berry, has always been a part of her family.
Thank you Chandler for fostering some of our hardest cases, giving them a loving home and a chance to be normal. We’d also like to thank you sponsors at Petco Love for showing their support this first month of the year!
Biggie Smalls and his Christmas card worthy adoption photo!!
Guess who finally went home!! It’s Biggie Smalls!! We’ve been pushing Biggie Smalls for adoption for some time. He’s a big boy in the shelter, and his boredom from hours in a kennel was getting the best of him. We thought his good looks and charming personality would do the trick, just look at those hazel eyes and that silky coat. But sadly, his size was something a lot of adopters were worried they weren’t equipped for. Well, this little family had a big dog of their own that was looking for a friend. And lo and behold, Biggie was the BEST match. He has been the sweetest boy, and all that big dog energy has phased out now that he’s in an environment full of love, and meant for a dog.
We’d like to thank Biggie’s awesome new parents for putting so much thought into his placement and making sure to be the best you can for him. Biggie is so lucky you picked him; he is clearly in the best hands and loving life! We’d also like to recognize Terry Subaru. It is Share the Love season, and Subaru is always making strides to support nonprofits like ours.
