We Were Adopted! April 14th – April 20th!

Our ‘Save the Next Pet’ adoption special was a success!

This weekend we had a very special adoption event. In an effort to “Help Save the Next Pet” we had 50% off adoption fees Saturday and Sunday, and a total of 22 pets Found Happiness! While we usually run specials when we are out of space and need help ourselves, it was our neighboring shelters who were in need this time.

You all know we work very closely with other organizations to transport pets in need via our ‘Transport to Happiness’ program. Whether it’s a long stay who needs a change in scenery, a sick pet in need of specialized treatment/funding, or neonates from smaller shelters without an established foster department.

Recently there has been a higher need in surrounding shelters like Pittsylvania, Rockbridge, Charlotte, and Amherst to name a few. These shelter and more are full and need help with their cat and dog population. We’ve made a small dent in our population to make room to save a few more pets, but always need to find more homes. If you are interested in adopting, consider clicking the link below to see our adoptable pets. Adoptable pets: https://lynchburghumane.org/adopt/adoption-information/

Thank you so much to everyone who adopted and thank you to our sponsors at Bank of the James for making these events possible. Also a special thank you to Ford Mays Wealth Management for being a sponsor leading up to our wonderful Best Friend Ball fundraiser.

Winter found a home in the Spring!!

This sweet girl is Winter. You may recognize her from social media posts we’ve made over the past few months. If you can not tell Miss Winter is Toothless! Living outside until the Winter of 2023 she developed dental disease at a young age. She was just 4 years old and needed the majority of her teeth extracted. While she recovered from surgery we sent her into foster care. Little did we know just how long she’d spend in foster care waiting for a home.

Winter was beloved in their home, but as much as they would have loved to keep her, it was not an option because their largest dog was petrified of her. Little ol’ Winter sweet and sassy sent shivers down the spine of a large hound. She was still loved and cared for fully as months and months went by. Being in a foster home was great, always better than the shelter, but it didn’t make her the top choice when adopters went looking. We tried to find her a home for a year when we agreed her best chance of adoption would be for her to return to the Center. It was agreed if she wasn’t adopted quickly we would send her back into foster.

Thankfully she found a home. A couple saw her on our page and fell in love with her toothless self. They emailed our team before stopping in and decided she’d be the perfect fit for their little family. Sometimes it takes a little longer than we hope for a pet to find a home but we never stop trying and doing what we can to make their time with us comfortable. Winter finally found her special home and we are thrilled for the new family!

Thank you so much to our sponsors Terry Subaru and Anne Wynne Taylor for playing a pivotal role in our mission through your support!

Long Stays AND working cats? What a win!!

This week, two of our long-stay cats, Mama Mooey and Adele, were adopted!! We currently have 4 working cats. These cats are usually found living outdoors and only brought to the shelter if they are sick or injured. Because these guys are used to outdoor living and become hyper-alert in confined, high-trafficked places like the shelter. But in the right environment, many of these cats could become quite social. Nevertheless, we’d like to find them homes ASAP so they can be comfortable!

We were so excited when a sweet gentleman with a farm came in looking for a working cat! We recommended Adele our longest stay cat, but with the size of his farm (and because they were already so close) we convinced him to take Mama Mooey too!

While these girls were not incredibly happy or social in the shelter environment, we know they’ll be living such a fulfilling life on their big farm! Thank you so much to their wonderful adopter and thank you Bank of the James for being this month’s sponsor.

If you are interested in your own working cat, just ask our team about Merritt and River Ridge! You can also stop by the Porch Room to see the few teens we have who could also make great basement cats!

Calliope went home after her debut on TV!

Each week ABC 13 invites us to bring a ‘furry friend’ to be featured on their Living in the Heart of Virginia segment. Last week we selected new resident, Calliope. This beauty previously lived outdoors but was found in Pulaski, Virginia and transferred to our organization for care. She is 5 years old and quite the looker. For an outdoor cat she was also very well taken care of so we aren’t sure if she was outdoors her entire life. We knew she’d find a home quickly if she was on TV and we were right!

Calliope was adopted just 3 days after airing on TV and being featured on the ABC website. We are so excited she was able to find a loving home and can not wait to see what adventures she goes on next in her new loving home. Thank you so much to her adopters, and thank you so much to our sponsors at Bank of the James for your continuous support.

We are so happy to share that long stay Cami has found a loving home (and we’re hoping it’s the last one)!

Why has Cami been here so long you might ask? Well, let’s call it a biting fixation. Cami thinks everyone around her are just giant chew toys. Yes, you heard that right! Our sweet, social girl Cami likes to bite people after luring them in with her gorgeous looks and flirty mannerisms. We’ve found Cami placement before as a shop cat. The owners loved her, but her love bites weren’t great for customers. Cami made her way back to the shelter where her biting and overarousal is at its peak.

Cami has never been mean, in fact, she loves being petted, scratched, and even held. She just gets overstimulated easily. Nobody enjoys being bitten, but if you’ve got a good eye for body language and quick reflexes you’ll be outmaneuvering Cami’s biting habits in no time!

It took us a while to convince people to give Cami a chance, but everything changed when a young gentleman came in already set on Cami, bites and all! He said he didn’t mind that she bites sometimes and would be happy to work with her and give her a loving home. We were ecstatic!! Now she’s in a lowkey environment with one other cat sibling hopefully living the dream, and nibbling fewer people. Thank you so much to her adopter for seeing her potential and giving her a home, and shoutout Bank of the James for being this month’s sponsor.
